About
About me¶
I’m Hasan, an Associate Professor at the Solar Energy Institute of Ege University. My background is in environmental engineering, and my work sits at the intersection of renewable energy, sustainability, and climate change. I have expertise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, multi-criteria decision analysis, and data science — tools I use to turn complex spatial and environmental data into actionable insights.
Research¶
My research applies GIS, remote sensing, and decision analysis techniques to assess the sustainable potential of renewable energy resources — solar, wind, and biomass — and to support the environmentally sound planning of solar and wind energy systems, biorefineries, and waste management facilities.
A particular focus of my work is the relationship between climate change and energy systems: how shifting temperature patterns affect heating and cooling demand, and how climate variability interacts with renewable energy potential. More recently, I have been engaged in urban energy planning and the evaluation of local climate action plans in terms of ambition and implementation performance.
Earlier in my career I also worked on water infrastructure, including the design of water supply systems and hydraulic modelling using EPANET.
Background¶
I hold a BSc, MSc, and PhD — all from Dokuz Eylül University. My BSc is in Environmental Engineering; my MSc and PhD were completed in the Environmental Technology Program. Shortly after graduating, I joined the Department of Environmental Engineering at Dokuz Eylül University as a research assistant and remained there from 1997 to 2013, contributing to research projects and teaching activities in wastewater treatment, water supply, drinking water treatment, and solid waste management.
Software and Tools¶
I am a strong advocate of Linux and free and open-source software (FOSS), and currently run Fedora Workstation with the GNOME desktop. For geospatial and analytical work I use: QGIS, GRASS GIS, and R.
I also enjoy web and graphic design, working with HTML, CSS, WordPress, Inkscape, and GIMP.
